The newest star of the Baltic Sea was designed by dSign

Tallink’s new MyStar vessel has been operating on the Tallinn-Helsinki route since December 2022. The ship’s interior was designed by dSign, known for experiential space design, and the design project took over three years.

MyStar operates on the route together with Megastar and replaced the M/S Star.

‘We are very excited that, as a result of this long project, the ship is finally ready for operation. This has been a dream project for our team and an interesting continuation of our previous ship projects. At its most successful, the cruise on this new vessel can be the best part of the customer’s whole trip,’ says Vertti Kivi, Head Designer and CEO of dSign Vertti Kivi & Co.

The interior design of Tallink’s previous ship, Megastar, was also mainly dSign’s creation.

Inspired by the Beauty of the Baltic Sea

The main inspiration and theme for the interior design of the new MyStar ship was the beauty of the Baltic Sea area, including its nature, culture and uniqueness.

Based on the Beauty of the Baltic Sea theme, a story was created that can be seen throughout the vessel in the form of images, videos and colours. An effort has been made to capture in pictures and videos the magically beautiful and small details of the underwater flora as well as the birds’ nests and cliffs above the water.

‘With the interior design, we wanted to show how beautiful and unique the Baltic Sea is as an area. There are 14 areas in total, and we wanted to create its own atmosphere for each area,’ says Vertti Kivi.

The colour scheme of the interior focuses especially on bright and fresh colours, while grey and dark shades have been left in the background. A unique experience has been created in every space by using contrasts in materials and shades, atmospheric lighting, and artworks specifically created for the ship.

‘The final product is like a musician’s album and the spaces are the album’s songs,’ describes Kivi.

The new ship meets the needs of modern passengers in the 2020s

MyStar is similar to Tallink’s popular Megastar ship, but the familiar spaces have been given a new look on MyStar and, after the update, they meet even better the needs of passengers in the present and future. They also form a smoother and more attractive customer path than before.

Park-like Family Picnic is an example of a totally new kind of space on MyStar. It has designed for the needs of families travelling with children, and the area has a playground, café and other services useful to the families.

In addition to the restaurants and lounge areas that are open to all passengers, MyStar has three separate premium spaces, instead of two on Megastar. The Comfort Lounge and the Business Lounge have been joined by the Platinum Lounge, which offers an exclusive travel experience and first-class facilities for passengers appreciating privacy and luxury. MyStar’s shopping world Traveller Superstore is the largest in the Baltic Sea.

In addition to unique furniture made in Finland, pieces of the MyFlow furniture collection designed by Vertti Kivi has also been used in the interior. Supporting local production is in line with the values of both the designer and the customer.

MyStar also has 46 passenger cabins for an overnight stay. The last ferry of the evening arrives on the other side of the bay in the morning. In both destinations, it’s also possible to stay in hotels designed by dSign.
